If you are reading this you probably know how important choosing the correct cards to play. The fact is, whether you have an Ace-Nine, or A-9, that is suited or unsuited, I would avoid playing it. Here’s why.

Why I Hate Ace-Nine, Or A-9, And Hate Playing It.

To me Ace-Nine, or A-9, is one of the sucker hands. It gets me and it probably get’s you. I hate Ace-Nine, or A-9, more than I despise other weak cards like 6-3 or 7-2. Why?

Because A-9 suckers you in. It is easy to get tricked by this little bugger. With seriously weak cards you know to fold, but Ace-Nine, even if it’s suited or unsuited, will tend to get you. Let me explain

1 – It’s just short of making straight.

A-10 can make a straight with only 3 cards (J+Q+K). A-9 is just short. So it kind of feels like it will help with a straight but in fact it won’t. You need 4 community cards to make the straight, which isn’t very good. If in fact the community did have 10+J+Q+K you would be in good running to win but the probability of this occurring is low.

2 – The Ace fools you.

Don’t get me wrong, Ace-Nine, or A-9, is a much better hand than some, but in fact it isn’t very good. The feeling of holding an ace, any ace for that matter, tricks your brain into thinking you have a stronger hand than you actually do. It is something about aces that do that to you.

3 – The 9 sucks.

This is the most painful part. The nine just doesn’t help at all. Come on, 10, J, Q, K are all better than it, plus, they are the most likely cards your opponent is going to be holding. The nine practically doesn’t even count as a kicker.

4 – An example of me being burned by an A-9

I played an Ace-Nine, or A-9 last night in fact. I was in a Sit N Go, mid-late game, sitting on the cutoff. Everyone checked round to me and I went for a blind steal, another player bet a little and I called. The flop came A-2-6. He checked, I bet, he called. Turn was 8 and the river was 2. I just placed my standard bet the whole way and he called each time. My opponent turns over A-Q. The A-9 burns me again.

I thought my opponent had pocket Kings or pocket Queens. I was wrong. The only thing that sat between me and victory was a strong kicker. And a 9 is not a strong kicker.

I’m sure as you are reading this you are wondering what other cards look good (even on the charts) but are in fact worse than the real worse cards. And you probably realize that if you avoided these sucker cards you would win more, and in fact they could be the reason you are losing but don’t know why. I’m sure you want to become a better poker player and win tournaments and money, so please, continue to research on these subjects because there are a lot more of these types of hands out there. The Origins Of Poker

Poker is a family of various card games played by two or more player who bet on the value of their hands. Numerous versions exist with each version differing based on the number of cards dealt, specific nuances and rules, betting limitations and hand rankings.

The exact origin of poker is unknown. The first known reference to poker was in 969 AD in China. The Emperor Mu-Tsung was reported to have played a game with his wife known as ‘Domino Cards’. The Persians were known to play two games in the 16th Century including a 96-card game known as ‘Ganjifa’ and a 25-card game known as ‘As Nas’. In Europe, several versions of these early game evolved including the German game ‘Pochspiel’, as well as the French game ‘Poque’.

Unreferenced in all the different variations of card games throughout history, the modern version of poker differs greatly with a unique focus on betting. This modern version of gambling is through to have originated in around the Mississippi River in the United States of America around the mid 1700s. It is commonly believed that French colonials introduced their national game ‘Poque’ and this started the modern versions of poker that we known today.

Early versions of the game involved 20 cards (AKQJT) and four players. There was no draw and bets were made on a narrower range of combinations including one pair, two pair, triplets, full and four of a kind. There was no straight, flush or royal flush at this point. In the mid 1830s, the 52-card version was gradually adopted partly to accommodate more player and to give more scope to the recently introduced flush. Poker now reached the pages of American Hoyle. Around 1845, Poker began introducing the ‘draw’. The improved the game by allowing a second round of betting and providing initially poor hands the ability to dramatically improve. From the middle of the 19th century, poker changed rapidly and became more widespread with modern day variations all starting to take form.

The modern history of poker can be attributed to a few key events over the last decades that catapulted poker into the mainstream. The first event to publicise poker is the release of the 1998 film ‘Rounders’ starring John Malkovich, Edward Norton and Matt Damon. The next key step in the history of poker is the modernisation of poker including easily accessible televised tournaments with hole card cameras including the likes of the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour. The final event that changed the history of poker forever is the victory of Chris Moneymaker, an unknown amateur player, in the 2003 World Series of Poker.

There aren’t any major drawbacks. The only problem with TAG is sometimes you have to wait a while to get dealt good hole cards. You might spend a lot of time just folding and not actually playing. Some players find this boring and want more action – there are different strategies for Texas Hold Em for those players.

Some extra points here. If you are playing tournament play TAG can be a killer because you could spend you whole time waiting for good cards and end up being out-gunned. Likewise, in cash games you could lose a small amount from the blinds you have to post when that comes around (but I’ve found the next time you win that will more than make up for it).

In conclusion, TAG is definitely a good strategy. Try it, practice it, master it, and you will be able to sit down at almost any poker table and walk away profitable. That is really a requirement if you want to play poker as your lifestyle and be able to support yourself just from your winnings.
